Rich, Silky Hot Chocolate (Made for Dunking)
There’s hot chocolate, and then there’s the sort worth sitting down for.
This version is rich, smooth and deeply chocolatey, made using the Peak & The Pantry Hot Chocolate Recipe Kit - a blend of malted cocoa and 70% Colombian chocolate buttons that melts into something properly velvety.
The longer you stir it, the thicker and silkier it becomes - somewhere between classic hot chocolate and proper Spanish drinking chocolate. Perfect for cold evenings, post-dinner mugs, or whenever tea isn’t quite going to cut it.

Why This Recipe Works
The malted chocolate blend adds depth without becoming overly sweet, while the chocolate buttons melt into the milk for a smoother, richer finish than cocoa powder alone.
It’s simple to make, easy to customise, and can be kept light and drinkable or simmered until thick enough for dunking biscuits.
You’ll Need
- From the Peak & The Pantry Hot Chocolate Recipe Kit
- 3 tbsp malted hot chocolate mix
- 25g chocolate buttons
- 375ml milk
How to Make Rich Hot Chocolate
- Warm the milk gently in a saucepan over a medium heat until steaming but not boiling.
- Add the malted chocolate mix and chocolate buttons, whisking until fully melted and smooth.
- Simmer gently for 2–5 minutes, stirring occasionally. The longer you stir it, the thicker and silkier it becomes.
- Pour into mugs and serve immediately.
Make It Your Own
- Add a splash of rum or brandy
- Top with whipped cream or marshmallows
- Use oat milk for an extra creamy finish
- Simmer for longer for a thicker, almost pudding-like texture
Best Served With
Good biscuits are non-negotiable here. Shortbread, digestives or salted chocolate cookies all work well.
For something more indulgent, serve with churros, doughnuts or thick slices of brioche for dunking.
About the Kit
The Peak & The Pantry Hot Chocolate Recipe Kit is made using 70% single-estate Colombian chocolate sourced from a family-run producer, alongside a rich malted cocoa blend for extra depth and creaminess.
Designed for proper hot chocolate nights, it’s small-batch, comforting and endlessly adaptable - whether you prefer yours silky and sippable or thick enough for a spoon.
FAQs
What’s the best milk for hot chocolate?
Whole milk gives the richest result, but oat milk works particularly well with the malted chocolate flavour.
Can I make this dairy-free?
Yes. Simply use your preferred plant milk.
Can I make it thicker?
Absolutely. Let it simmer for longer and continue stirring - it thickens naturally as it cooks.
Is it very sweet?
Not overly. It’s rich, dark and chocolate-forward, with a subtle malty sweetness.
